Network:
all nodes are dual CPUs, at least 1 GHz (most 2.4-2.8 GHz) and 500 MByte of memory
in general. 96 the nodes are connected in groups of 4=24 via Fast Ethernet to a Gigabit switch, which itself could have 12 connections. These are connected to one of the two  main switches (SSR backbone), through which also other network traffic goes. There could be the possibility to have 200 nodes which internally are connected via Gbit Ethernet, with 2 connections of 10 Gbit, connected via multiple Gbit connections with the main switch.

Our expressed preference: Importance is given to homogeneity in the network layout.
Interference by other users is to be avoided. If it cannot be avoided it would be
good to know when and when it might occur. Therefore the layout should
not include the SSR backbone as far as possible. We need UDP multicast
transparency over the network.
